Cara and Lloyd started out as colleagues on a super yacht before a dinner date onboard the Black Pearl restaurant, moored in a marina in Malta, saw their friendship spiral into something more. “Lloyd proposed to me on the top deck of the yacht when we had just sailed into New York. The captain had dropped anchor in front of the Statue of Liberty. It was such an amazing moment,” gushes Cara.

Even better, the groom had craftily planned for his best friend, a fellow crew member, to be poised and ready with a camera.

“He captured our engagement, click by click! It was lovely to be able to share the photos with family and friends.”

When we’re not cruising the oceans for work, we’ve made Mallorca our home. It felt like it was meant to be when I found my Spanish-designed Rosa Clara wedding dress.” Cara was lucky enough to find her gown in the first boutique she visited. “I knew that it was ‘the one’ straight away.”

Of course, with such an iconic, jet-setting proposal, it only made sense that Cara and Lloyd choose a dream destination for their wedding too – Australia!

“We chose Coral Sea Resort on the Great Barrier Reef for our venue.”

“I knew I wanted to keep my outfit simple and understated to show off the setting. With that in mind, I chose nude suede Jimmy Choos and Swarovski drop earrings, forgoing the tradition of wearing a veil completely.”

The groom opted for a smart Hugo Boss suit for his aisle attire in charcoal grey. He teamed it with a crisp white shirt and a silver tie. “He looked so handsome and happy when I saw him at our ocean wedding.”

Two bridesmaids, one of Cara’s childhood best friends and a close friend whom she met through work, joined the bride for her big day. “Katie lived in Australia and Dani lived in France at the time, so I let them choose their own dresses.”

“The only criteria for the bridesmaid dresses were that their selections be white, short and beachy!”

Airlie Beach Bridal took care of Cara’s hair and makeup on the day. “Keep your look natural. You want to be a glossier version of yourself on the big day, but you still need to be you.”

Making the most of their ocean wedding setting, Cara and Lloyd celebrated their wedding ceremony on the lawn, overlooking the Coral Sea. “My father walked me down the aisle, my oldest brother read ‘Love Is’ and we played Rebecca Fergusson’s ‘Teach Me How To Be Loved’ during our civil ceremony.”

After the “I do”s, the couple and their guests tucked into a barbecue buffet, featuring sirloin steaks and tandoori-marinated chicken. Salmon and calamari in a cream pesto pasta, gratin potato bake and spiced vegetable couscous offered tempting side dishes, alongside a selection of salads.

“We chose a coral and silver colour scheme with a subtle beach vibe for our ocean wedding.”

“Senses Events took care of the styling, colour scheme and planning for us. Paola, our planner, did a brilliant job organising our wedding. She has a great eye for detail and ensured every last thing was perfect.

With our wedding being abroad, we also found it simpler to enlist the help of a décor company, The Event Company Whitsundays. This meant we didn’t have to purchase and then transport all the details ourselves. We had tea lights on all the tables and orchids on each place setting. Don’t get stressed about all the little details. Once the day begins, it’s bound to be absolutely perfect anyway and only you will notice any changes.”

Digital invitations proved the simplest means of extending invitations to the couple’s far flung guests, who attended Cara and Lloyd’s day from all over the world. “Our wedding planner arranged for our wedding logo to be printed and placed onto individual holders for our guests to keep after the wedding.”

Flower Hut took care of all the floral details. “My bouquet was an unstructured posy of Miss Piggy roses, coral snapdragons, lime button chrysanthemums, apricot wax flower and coral gem cluster roses, all tied with a white ribbon.” Coral roses and fern leaves formed tropical-inspired corsages for the bridesmaids.

“Our florist also decorated the flower arch that we stood beneath to exchange vows. The arch featured a beautiful combination of coral, peach and orange flowers and foliage.”

The couple chose a two-tier caramel mud cake, decorated in fondant, for their wedding cake. A peach ribbon and fresh orchid blooms decorated the tiers in another nod to their exotic destination.

An acoustic musician played relaxed tunes, adding to the laid-back beach atmosphere.

“We chose ‘Make You Feel My Love’ by Adele for our first dance.”

Your wedding goes by so quickly, so make sure you remember it’s a day all about the two of you.”

Hopping along the coast in Australia, the newlyweds honeymooned on Hamilton Island. “We stayed in a villa for seven days, giving us plenty of time to explore the island. We went diving in the beautiful blue ocean, enjoyed long walks, relaxed and ate lots!”
