If you decided to have an engagement party, there are a few things to keep in mind regarding tradition and etiquette. The who, what, when, where, and why’s always come to mind first, and fill your head with details that can almost make you not know where to start. There is one huge thing to keep in mind when throwing together an engagement party; remember there is still a wedding to plan and that’s most important.

Who

Who do you invite to the engagement party? Whether you’re the bride and groom planning this party or the parents, the big thing here is to keep it to a minimum. Remember whoever you invite should also be invited to the wedding, as etiquette states. If you don’t, your guests will wonder what they did wrong at the engagement party to not get an invite to the wedding. Or your guests will assume they’re invited to the wedding, so to avoid a sticky situation you might want to keep it to close friends and immediate family.

What

Throwing an engagement party is more fun than a phone call. It’s a great opportunity to introduce key people from your lives because they are going to be seeing a lot more of each other and potentially help you plan your wedding together! It’s a great way to have different groups of friends and generations to get to know each other in a more intimate setting.

When

The engagement party should fall in a few months or so from your actual engagement. You’ll want to have a little time to plan it but not overwhelm yourself, and your guests, by having it so soon. You’ll also want to make sure everyone has enough notice to make plans to be there!

Where

This is another big thing to take into consideration, where to have the party? If all of your guests are local, then you’re obviously going to have it locally. But if you’re from a different city and all of your guests are there, then maybe you should have it there? Maybe the bride’s parent’s want to host it at their house because traditionally the bride’s parents throw the first celebration. It’s also about the vibe you want to have, whether that be a classy venue or someone’s house.

Why

Because you’re engaged, obviously! This is a great time for all of your closest friends and family to come together to celebrate you and your soon to be spouse. This will also give your guests an idea of what to expect come wedding time.

Tip: It might be a good idea to start a small registry because some guests will come bearing gifts. Don’t register for the big ticket items, because that says bridal shower rather than engagement party.

How

Keep the invitations simple. If you haven’t already chosen your decor, themes, and colors, it’s best to not have your engagement party set with a theme. Remember to not upstage the wedding, this is just a great time for an intimate celebration with the people you love before the real wedding planning begins!
