After preparing breakfast in bed and baking a cake, it’s fair to say Kate was a little bemused when Lee didn’t seem pleased with his birthday surprises. “Little did Kate know that I was just trying to throw her off the scent. I told her that there was only one thing she could say to make me happy on my birthday, then I pulled out the ring and asked her to be my wife!”

Despite setting out on the search to find her wedding dress with a simple, strapless A-line in mind, Kate ended up choosing the opposite!

“I’d tried on about 15 dresses by this point, so I was starting to get a feel for what styles I liked. My Essense of Australia gown was fitted, sparkly and with straps. In other words, it was not at all what I thought I originally wanted! It pays to keep an open mind.”

Opting for understated accessories, the bride chose a hair slide and veil to finish her look. “Lee chose me a beautiful bracelet from his favourite jeweller, featuring two stones that matched our wedding colour theme as well as a blue stone droplet on the clasp for my something blue.”

Of course, the groom almost always enjoys the surprise of seeing his bride in her wedding dress for the first time on the big day, but the bride doesn’t always get the same experience.

“I wanted to have that element of surprise too,” says Kate.

“That’s why I left Lee to it to choose his suit on his own. They all looked so smart and I loved that my father’s outfit matched the best men, too.”

In another twist on tradition, Lee also chose to wear his own something borrowed for their pink country wedding. “Kate’s grandfather passed away before our wedding and I’d asked him previously whether I could wear his pocket watch on the day. I added this as a personal touch – my own something borrowed, I suppose – and purchased similar style pocket watches for my ushers to keep our looks coordinated.”

Four bridesmaids joined Kate, supporting her every step of the way. “My maid of honour in particular kept me so calm as the wedding approached. She gave me the best send-off into married life. I chose complementary grey and pink dresses from House of Fraser for them. I loved the sequin bodices, they were perfect for our pink country wedding.”

Makeup artist Lana, from Lana’s Nails and Beauty, created a makeup look to withstand both the weather and lots of hugging and kissing, using Yves Saint Laurent and Bobbi Brown products. Jamie Hair took care of Kate’s locks, even adapting the style at the last minute to be worn up instead of down.

“I walked down the aisle with my father to The O’Neill Brothers’ version of Pachelbel’s ‘Canon in D’, which is slightly faster.”

“I did wonder if Lee thought I was keeping him waiting deliberately though, because I wanted to enter the church at a very specific point, which happened to be four minutes into the song!” the bride laughs. The couple married in a religious ceremony but kept it relatively informal with the help of their vicar, who already knew them well. They chose ‘On Your Wedding Day’ and a passage from 1 Corinthians 13 for readings.

“I’m a real foodie,” says Lee, “so I took charge of our tapas-style menu for the wedding breakfast.”

“The starter was a sharing platter of calamari, Spanish omelette, chicken skewers, paella and meatballs. It proved to be a great way to get our guests talking! For the main course, we chose a trio of chicken with a medley of Mediterranean vegetables. Dessert included another trio, this time a raspberry ripple ice cream, chocolate mousse and white chocolate cheesecake.”

Pastel colours and flowers kept the celebration summery. Rustic, floral stationery gave the first clue to the theme, created by Plain Sage Designs. “We also asked them to design a Mr & Mrs Quiz for the tables on the day.”

“Our reception venue, Redhouse Barn, was beautiful without needing lots of decoration.”

“We simply added jam jars of roses for the finishing touch to our pink country wedding. Our florist, Flowers by Tamsin, was incredible! I’m not a big flower person,” says Kate, “and my grey and pink colour scheme wasn’t the easiest to work with. I was delighted with what she created though and many people commented on her clever use of eucalyptus to add the grey element.”

Good friend Amelia, from Amelia Bedelia’s, baked their wedding cake as a gift to the couple. “It was the most incredible cake we’ve ever eaten!

We decided to buy Breast Cancer Research pins for the ladies and British Heart Foundation pins for the men for favours in memory of Lee’s parents.”

“Having our friends and family celebrating in one place for our pink country wedding was the best part of the day, everything else was just icing on the cake!”

The newlyweds jetted off for a three-week South American adventure with STA Travel for their honeymoon. “They were brilliant at recommending affordable but extraordinary experiences!”
