It can be difficult to ask your best friends to spend any money, but it has to be done to get anywhere. From the moment you ask anyone to be in your bridal party, it’s important to have the money talk. From the beginning ask THEM what they are willing to spend on a dress, on shoes, hair, makeup, and overall. It’s better to ask them sooner than later so they can potentially start saving up for the costs to come. This isn’t just about bridesmaids either, but keep the men in mind as well. Weddings are expensive in every aspect, so it’s important to find ways to cut down on costs especially for those who are making an effort to be there for you on your big day.

The first thing you can do is keep it local. Your bridesmaids and groomsmen are going to have to go somewhere to get their dresses or suits, and maybe even have to make another trip entirely for fittings and alterations. Try to keep events local, too. If you want a weekend get-a-way for your bachelorette party, try to keep it within a radius as well as confirming with them first what the cost will be. It’s better to discuss the costs up front so everyone is on the same page and able to cover the costs without surprises.

Another thing you can do is to let them all collaborate and pick the bridesmaids dresses they want! If you’re doing the same dress, make sure all the girls love it and are dead-set on spending the money regardless of what their budget was. Get the lowest budget first, and tell the consultant up front to show them dresses within that price range. That way everyone is happy and nobody is spending more than they can afford.

Ask them to skip on the gift-giving. They might feel pressured to give gifts throughout your wedding adventure but assure them that this is not needed. Their participation and help planning is a gift in itself, as well as their friendship. Tell them to save the gift money for a group nail appointment or to budget into their dress.

One of the biggest tips for cutting costs is to keep an open understanding of everyone’s budgets. Although it is YOUR day, you still want to have your friends to be able to be by your side without getting a loan for bridesmaid expenses.  There are many dress styles, alternatives, DIY ideas, as well as bachelorette party ideas that are cost effective, local, as well as doable for all members of your bridal party. Your bridesmaids will thank you for thinking of them too!
