Your best friend is getting married and you’re so excited!

But after that excitement wears off, you realize that you have a problem. Who will you bring as your plus-one to the wedding?

When choosing plus-one, it’s important to ask the following questions:

1. Are they self-sufficient?

There’s nothing worse than bringing a date to a wedding and having to hold their hand all night. The ideal plus-one will either know other people at the wedding or be able to make new friends and start their own conversations, leaving you free to visit with your friends.

2. Have you known them long enough?

How long is long enough? Well, when you bring a plus-one to a wedding, everyone will assume that the two of you are dating. If you just met your plus-one on Tinder, it’s probably best to leave them at home.

3. Are you comfortable with them?

This ties in with number 2 quite nicely. If you don’t know your plus-one very well, chances are, you won’t feel comfortable with them and that is key at a wedding. Also, most weddings involve travel and possible lodging, so if you’re not comfortable sharing a room with your plus-one or sending them home in an Uber, you may want to re-think your choice.

4. Are they an ex?

There is literally nothing worse than showing up to a wedding with an ex of the bride or groom…or an ex of anyone’s for that matter. Make sure that your plus-one was not a past plus-one of another to avoid any unnecessary drama on the big day.

5. Will most people like this person?

This may seem like a very obvious thing to think about, but sometimes it’s not that easy. It’s very simple to think that if you’ll get along with your plus-one, then you’ll have a good time, but if your plus-one is friends with the couple and they weren’t invited to the wedding, there’s probably a good reason why. If you want to make sure your guest will jive with the wedding party and other guests, it never hurts to run your choice by the bride or groom.

At the end of the day, unless you’re 100% sure about your plus-one, sometimes it’s best just to go alone. You’ll have plenty of time to visit with your friends and do what you actually want to do without having to worry about another person. Plus, who knows, maybe you’ll meet someone on the dance floor.
