The Fairy Godmother Project…

A Head Over Heels Blog Series by Josey Stafford

The Fairy Godmother Project was founded by a likely pair: a photographer and a florist. Likely because as a photographer and as a florist they already felt as though they were making dreams come true; by capturing the moments of the best day of your life and by enhancing your wedding with flowers. Amy Coppersmith and Terri Uy-Lennon both agree, the Fairy Godmother Project started almost accidentally, but I’d argue that it was completely serendipitous.

Amy remembers the first couple that inspired the Fairy Godmother Project. Paige was alone planning her wedding while her fiancé was deployed to the Middle East. She was feeling terribly stressed with the absence of Cody and with the impending date of their wedding. Amy, Terri and a few other wedding vendors banned together and helped Paige plan her wedding, while lowering her stress level.

“Should we do this every year?”

It was a rhetorical question.

For Terri it was a chance to do something to give back to the community.

My dad is Navy, my husband is grew up as a Navy brat, so I have a special place in my heart for military families. Paige needed the help and we wanted to help her out. I appreciate all of the sacrifices that military families have made and still do, for all of us. It’s our way of saying ‘thank you’.

Minnesota wedding donated to a military couple

The Fairy Godmother Project gifts 1 wedding a year to a deserving military couple, as a way of showing patriotic gratitude to a couple wanting to wed but unable to do so because of financial restrictions or because of the difficulties with planning and finding time to plan their wedding. Especially with a commitment like military service, spare time can be hard to come by.

Here’s how it works:
Community members, superior officers, peers and friends can nominate a deserving couple. The couple must be nominated by someone other than themselves. The process is simple and has few requirements or restrictions. Once a couple is selected, they will meet with Terri and Amy and myself, the 2018 official wedding planner, and the planning begins.

The response has been immense. Vendors are excited to help and we are so excited to have them. Together as a team we are making the wedding dreams of one deserving couple come true. What could be better than that?

When I first came upon the Fairy Godmother Project I couldn’t have been more excited to be a part of the project, and as the wedding planner for the next wedding in 2018, I am ecstatic. My parent’s met in the Marines and had a short engagement and a simple and sweet wedding. While I completely support wedding the way that fits your life, I also think there should be an alternative to hurried engagements and The Fairy Godmother Project is just that alternative.
