“We gather here each year. All the Roma Kalaidzhi come here. All the Kalaidzhi beautiful girls have to come here as we can not hunt for them in the villages.It’s a pleasant surprise, when a very beautiful girl shows up, everyone would gather around her and want to make friends. They all have to give some money, you know, but everybody is short of money nowadays.”

“More families now hide and give away their girls in secret without asking for money. They tell stories that the families took some money, but there’s nothing, only words. They worry that if they keep asking for money their daughters will never get married. What will they do then when they get older? They all need to have a home and a family. That’s why our Kalaidzhi tradition is dying. Before we had money, now we can barely make a living.”

“Roma people gather here not only on St.Todor’s day, though it’s the biggest meeting. But there are some people here every weekend. Young people do know each other so it’s not necessary to meet here.”

LEAD IN
Every year young Roma women and men from the Kalaidzhi community in Bulgaria leave their villages and gather in the hope of finding a spouse.
Under the watchful eyes of parents and grandparents there is music, dancing and plenty of flirting.
STORYLINE
This young man and woman are from Bulgaria’s Kalaidzhi Roma community. They are dancing on a car to demonstrate their affection for each other.And they are here to find a spouse.
The highly anticipated spring event, which coincides with the start of the Easter season and the advent of crisp, sunny weather, takes place on St Todor’s ( Theodore’s) Day in a litter-strewn parking lot next to the bus station in Stara Zagora, a Bulgarian city known for its poets.
Donka Hristova is at the fair in the hope of finding a husband.
She goes off in search of her Mr Right.
