More Brits than ever are looking to films for wedding-planning inspiration

Ever watched Four Weddings and a Funeral, 27 Dresses or Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride and thought “that’s what I want for my big day”?

Millions of Brits will be watching Harry and Meghan tie the knot at Windsor Castle tomorrow, but it turns out that only a fraction of soon-to-be-wed couples will be taking inspiration from the royal celebrations.

In fact, it turns out that more people prefer looking to the iconic scenes from films and TV shows for wedding ideas, with a quarter of Brits citing Four Weddings and a Funeral as their number-one inspiration.

The poll, which was conducted by national cinema chain Showcase, also revealed the sunshine ceremony in Mamma Mia was a favourite for one in five Brits, while rom-com Bridesmaids was the the third most popular wedding film.

Creepy stop-motion animation Corpse Bride also made the list of top 10 films, with many Brits opting for an alternative, gothic-themed celebration.

“Despite the huge spotlight on Harry and Meghan’s wedding this May, it seems there’s no beating the ceremonies of the silver screen,” says Mark Barlow, General Manager of Showcase Cinemas. “A-listers and Hollywood stars are trumping the Royal Family despite Harry marrying a world-famous actress.”

“It seems the film-obsessed generation take inspiration from their hours in front of the screen, with Hollywood even beating social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest as a go-to source of inspiration for brides-to-be.”

The gap is even wider for millennials, with those aged 18 to 24 being four times as likely to look to films and social media sites for style tips and themes, over the Royal Family.
