The average wedding costs $20,000, but that number isn’t necessarily realistic for some people. One of the first things any bride and groom should do is determine an overall budget for every detail in the wedding. It is important to include any contributing party in the conversation as well so they can give their input on what they are comfortable and not comfortable spending.

Reception

The biggest chunk of the budget will go to your reception, considering the cost of the venue, decorations, and especially caterers.

Photographer & Videographer

The photographer and if you choose to have a videographer is the second largest allocation in the wedding budget.Photographers and videographers charge anywhere to $800 to even $5,000 depending on what package you want. It is common to charge per hour or for a time slot, where most brides will pay thousands of dollars for all day coverage.

DJ/ Music

Having a DJ is another cost that ranges to around $1,000. The DJ doesn’t just play music but have the microphones set up for introducing the couple, speeches and toasts, and for all around guidance to the guests. You could also opt for a live band which typically costs more.

Wedding Planner

A wedding planner can also range around $2,000 depending on the services and amount of planning involved. A wedding planner helps you not only plan your entire wedding day, but they coordinate the day itself to make sure nothing goes wrong and allows the bride to focus on the day worry-free. Some brides don’t mind planning it themselves, others need all the help they can get!

Ceremony & Decorations

The next two things compare in price, which is the ceremony and the decorations and flowers. The ceremony consists of paying the officiant, favors and gifts, transportation, and additional items as well as the venue space.

Decorations and flowers are a given, from bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages, aisle decorations, and more. And don’t forget the floral arrangements or centerpieces for the entire reception.

Stationery

Stationery is a whole other cost in itself. From save the dates, invitations, RSVP’s, and even wedding programs, this can add up fast. Not to mention the commonly forgotten postage that wasn’t budgeted for.

Wedding Attire

Speaking of things that are commonly forgotten, there are some big things that need to be remembered. The wedding planning process includes a lot of pre-wedding events that the bride will need outfits for. This also could include new outfits for the honeymoon, as well. A bride should also keep in mind the undergarments and accessories for that day. Nothing better than brand new lingerie for your wedding day!

Often Overlooked Expenses

Next is all the beauty treatments such as manicures, pedicures, facials, and trials for hair and makeup. There should also be room in the budget for extra alterations just in case. If you’re having a tent wedding, remember a tent floor is vital so you and your guests can keep off the grass. Lighting is also commonly forgotten, as well as audio at the ceremony. For vendors, it’s important to feed them as well as pay for delivery, setup, break-down, and overtime fees.

Lastly, don’t forget to remember the marriage license—the ticket to changing your last name! It is so important to remember to budget wisely for every little detail especially the unpredictable things like unexpected and uninvited guests.

If you have a budget to live by, the wedding will be a lot less stressful.
