A Head Over Heels Blog Series by Josey Stafford

A wedding includes a sincere ceremony and a slightly more rowdy reception, sometimes that ceremony includes flower girls and jumping the broom, blessings and poetry. How ever you decide to commit your lives to one another, whether it takes 10 minutes, an hour or two days, I’d like to make a compelling argument for making it an intimate affair.

Just because you are having a smaller guest list for the ceremony doesn’t mean you can’t amp it up for the reception. An intimate ceremony means only those most important to you witness your commitment, and it’s a great way to let those most special to you know that they are most special.

There are some splendid Minneapolis-area hotels that offer banquet rooms that are perfect for intimate ceremonies. Why? Because they have at least a few rooms with smaller capacities. That means you can do something crazy creative like circular seating. Minneapolis Marriott Southwest is one such hotel that allows for a beautifully private Minnesota wedding ceremony.

The trick with intimacy is candles and delicate lighting. Most venues will absolutely allow for real flames as long as their container is taller than the flame. That means hurricane vases for pillar candles, votives for the small guys, or even lanterns. I suggest a snuffer for an easier time when you need to put out the lights, then let the candles sit for a while before putting them away. Wax is a wicked friend.

A smaller ceremony guest count can mean more adorable details like individual programs, assigned seating, guests ushered to their seats, and perhaps a string quartet. Just because your ceremony is dimly lit does not mean you have to get married at dusk. Feel free to get married at the usual time, between 3 and 6 pm. Minnesota winter weddings mean the sun goes down sooner making the mood feel more cohesive and because the winter is colder an indoor ceremony might not be the worst way to vow your lives to another.
