What is the “correct” way to invite guests to your wedding? How should you determine what text to use on your invitation, now that you’ve chosen the style itself?

MIKE CASSIMATIS PHOTOGRAPHY

What does a good wedding invitation include?

• The Who

• The What

• The Where

• The When

….but that’s not all!

The top of the invitation is always the hosting of the who. Which sounds like a Dr. Seuss book but I digress! The options are limited (usually) to who is hosting the wedding and/or the reception. The navigation can be tricky if there are divorced parents, if step parents are added to the mix, or a number of other reasons. Knowing the usual niceties makes it easier to understand what has been normal in past weddings and how the two of you will decide the layout of your wedding invitation.

Some suggestions follow, beginning with more formal options, ending with less formal, more casual options. Find the one that best describes you, your wedding and seems authentic.

Adding in Step-Parents? That is the most asked question about how to create a wedding invitation. It doesn’t need to be sticky. Ask the host(s) how they would like to proceed. Do we understand that this situation can get crazy sometimes—- yes we do. In that case, you have to do what you think is best, weigh your options carefully and don’t hesitate to ask friends, family, or clergy for their opinion.

A suggestion to add Step-Parents:

Mr. Anthony Evans and Mrs. Valerie Evans

Mrs. Suzanne Murphy and Mr. Steve Murphy

along with
and Mr. & Mrs. Brian Taylor

request the honor of your company
at the marriage of their children

and
Michael John Taylor

Less Formal:

Not a formal type of couple? Or maybe you’re looking for an invitation that has a softer, more casual sound? We suggest you start with a formal invitation using the type of hosting your wedding will have. Starting with that, cross it out— make additions– mark it up! At the end of the day there is NO right or wrong, the goal is to have a wedding invitation that is as unique as you are, and one that will set the tone of and reflect the wedding itself.

Less Formal Verbiage:

  • Join us for the wedding of _____
  • _____ invite you to celebrate their marriage
  • With joyful hearts, _____ request your presence at their wedding

  • Your presence is requested at the wedding of _____

  • _____ invite you to their wedding on _____
  • Please join us for our wedding
  • _____  invite you to join them as they say “I do”
  • Please come help us celebrate our love
  • _____ request the pleasure of your company as they exchange vows
  • The wedding day of _____
  • _____ would be honored to have you present when we exchange vows

Other things you should include on your wedding invitation:

• dress code

• directions if necessary

• are children welcome?

While you may not think it is important to tell your guests what to wear to your wedding, some notes about dress code are always appreciated and may help to defray hurt feelings, or the possibility of your guests being uncomfortable. Be specific. Use terms such as Black Tie, Cocktail Attire, Casual Beachwear, etc.

In this day of easily accessibly maps you might not think that directions are necessary. If you don’t supply a map or further instructions, check that the street address you give in your invitation returns clear and concise directions when you put it in your phone as a trial.

Are children welcome? There might not be anything more hotly debated when it comes to deciding the details of a wedding. Have a logical discussion with all “voting members” of your wedding and come to a decision. Stick to it. Don’t apologize for it. It is what it is. (Right????)
