Once you finally pay for your wedding, the last thing you want to do is overpay for your honeymoon. Here are 10 tips on how to get the best bang for your buck and book your dream honeymoon for the best price!

  1. Price out your airfare. Before you pick an official destination, check the fares for certain destinations to get the best price. Also keep in mind that some countries such as Jamacia, Puerto Rico, and Mexico have plenty of nonstop flights from the United States. Other places that are smaller and less popular require connections as well as smaller local airlines. Tip: Use your miles!
  2. Be realistic. While everyone wants to go to Bora Bora, the average price for two is around $11,000. While destinations such as Mexico range for as little as $1,000-$3,000 for all inclusive resorts. Most of the Caribbean will average like this!
  3. Keep in mind holiday rates. Expect to pay high rates during the winter seasons, so maybe try to plan your honeymoon in the warmer months when the rates go back down.
  4. Consider a travel registry. Couples who have fully stocked homes can open a registry for their friends and family to help cover the costs for their honeymoon. You can do this through a travel agent, through a resort (such as Marriott, Starwood, Sandals), or even through a cruise line (Carnival).
  5. Price out multiple packages. Travel packages that combine hotels, flights, transportation and even excursions are a great way to get more for less. It’s better to check multiple sites and hotels before deciding. There’s always something better out there!
  6. Remember all the costs. Just because you paid a certain amount for your package, don’t forget taxes, luggage fees, food, drinks, tips, spa treatments, and of course souvenirs! Speaking of tips, don’t forget to take some dollar bills with you!
  7. Be flexible with your departure date.  Check out alternative travel dates surrounding your wedding day, both on the front and the back end. If you marry on a Saturday, you may find that the fares are much higher on Sunday than the following Tuesday.
  8. Book early. If you’re going to a popular honeymoon destination in peak season, don’t wait for fares to drop — they’re more likely to go up as inventory sells out.
  9. Don’t expect an upgrade. Airlines used to upgrade newlyweds to first-class, but that’s no longer a thing. It doesn’t hurt to ask at check-in, but remember not to expect anything. This is also the case for resorts. If they have the room availability, ask if they can upgrade your room free of charge. They will most of the time allow this upon availability, but sometimes the resort is booked.
  10. Research! Research! Research! Check out the rates on Hotels.com and Priceline.com to see the general range of room rates. Then go one step further by pricing out rooms on the hotels’ own sites. Some brands offer best-price guarantees you won’t want to miss. Many hotels also offer free upgrades for couples marrying on their property.
