“My favorite moment was when the DJ played one of our all-time favorite songs, “For Once In My Life,” by Stevie Wonder, and somehow the dance floor cleared for us. It was like a scene out of a movie.” See all of the emerald green moments captured by Luma Weddings here:

On a tiny, moss-covered shelf in the rock behind the deafening waterfall, he asked me to spend my life with him. “There’s a ring in the car!” he shouted. It was perfect – we had discussed getting married and it was definitely in the works, but I was completely surprised that he did it then and there – so romantic and a perfect example of how Reed takes me out of my comfort zone for the absolute best experiences.

Reed would have been happy getting married at City Hall or eloping on a mountaintop, but he was totally supportive of my slightly more elaborate vision. Winter and Christmastime is my favorite time of the year, and I loved the idea of marrying them. All I knew was I wanted soft candlelight, evergreens and beautiful music.

A rich, dark hunter green was the color I wanted to use, so flowers stayed fairly minimal (creamy white garden roses and some white and blush winter berries scattered throughout our evergreen arch, centerpieces, bouquets and other decors). My inspiration was an Elle Decor cover where interior designer Ken Fulk decked out a gorgeous ski chalet in wild, unruly evergreens, branches and roses. Bridesmaids dresses in rich green velvet pulled that green theme out even more.

My mom created gorgeous cedar and noble fir wreaths with white roses and berries for the dining tables, and our florist worked several sets of antlers into our stunning ceremony “altar”, which was a nod to Reed’s family who has a long tradition of hunting in Washington. We also gathered family wedding photos as far back as we could and displayed them in beautiful frames with calligraphed name cards to identify family members – that was a special touch that our family really appreciated. We also made table numbers that each corresponded to a year in our lives, one through 20. We used photos of us as kids, which were pretty cute side-by-side at each table.

A wonderful thing about the night was the toasts. They hit all the funny, sweet, poignant notes. I lost my dad several years ago and it was touching to hear peoples’ memories of him and what they imagined he’d be doing and saying if he had been there. So lovely.

My flowers kept the wild, wintery feeling going – pine needles, roses, lisianthus, some kind of crazy conifer I didn’t recognize but loved, and a little spray of paperwhite, which is a special favorite of mine and my mom’s. The scent is intoxicating and totally evokes winter and Christmas for me.

My dress was custom made by a local shop – super simple in silk crepe with long sleeves, high neck, open back, full skirt. All the women in my family have worn long sleeves, so that was an easy choice. It was a total dream, and I felt very comfortable and “me” in it. I think we looked pretty sharp and timeless with Reed in his tux and me in my gown. I changed into a gorgeous white jumpsuit by Jamie Von Stratton (look her up, too!) – very disco and SO fun to dance in.

Our wedding day was totally overwhelming in the best way. Of course, dressing up and eating delicious food and dancing the night away with all your favorite people is awesome, but to see the faces of so many who have made the effort to be there to celebrate and who love you and wish you the best is truly magical.

Take a few moments with your new spouse and soak it in – it’s such an intense day. Reed and I are really happy we took our time and just looked at each other and laughed in astonishment at how awesome the day and night were. Try not to be caught up in pleasing every friend and family member – it’s about you and your love!
