As many couples find, the cost of the wedding we’re dreaming of is quickly mounting up. That means it’s compromise time, so we are having to choose the key things we want to spend our money on and work out which things we could go without.

One of the first things couples often look at cutting from the day is a videographer. But after the big day, your photographs and film will be what you remember your day by – can you really do without that? Yes, you set a budget for a reason, but why not spend less on something else to allow you to have your day filmed too?

Should I hire a videographer?

When we thought about hiring a videographer, we were a little unsure. I would love to have our wedding day on film, so that in years to come we can watch it back and remember every little detail. From our first glimpse of each other at the end of the aisle to our guests giving it their all on the dance floor, I want to cherish it all.

But unfortunately, as my fiance Ben pointed out, we don’t have an endless pot of money and there are many other aspects of the day that quickly eat up your budget – feeding all of your guests, for one.

DIY wedding videos

Working at Wedding Ideas, I have the advantage (or disadvantage, when you want to include too many things!) of being familiar with companies in the wedding industry, so I don’t need to spend hours researching. I already knew about Shoot It Yourself and had read lots of feedback from real couples that had used them before and loved the results.

The concept is simple: they send you the video camera and lighting, which is everything that you need to film your own video. You then nominate one of your wedding guests, or a couple of people, to film the big day for you, before sending the footage and equipment back to the professionals at Shoot It Yourself.

Their experts will edit it into a short film for you and voila, you have a unique way to film your day! All of the feedback from previous couples says how, because guests knew the person filming, the end result is so much more personal and fun. There are different packages too, so you can hire one or two cameras depending on what you want and how much money you want to spend.

That’s why we decided to film our day with Shoot It Yourself. Not only will we get a professionally edited video, but we will also receive the unedited footage too – which I am sure will provide plenty of laughs once the post wedding blues set in!

They have just announced the newest addition to their portfolio, an app that allows you to film parts of the wedding on your phone before sending the footage into Shoot It Yourself to edit. It really couldn’t be easier. All that’s left to do is to decide who will be behind the camera… have fun!
