Soft and sophisticated shades of grey style this modern barn wedding

Las Vegas sets the scene for many a white chapel wedding, and it was in this city that Scott asked Claire to be his wife. “I had no idea it was coming and the moment he asked me was so intimate and emotional,” gushes Claire. “We met my parents, sister and brother-in-law for dinner afterwards – it was an amazing evening celebrating!”
While the happy couple did wait until they were back in the UK to say “I do”, Claire chose a gown with all the glamour and impact you’d imagine when you think of Vegas.
“I felt like a princess for the day in my Blue by Enzoani mermaid dress.”
“I loved the pearl buttons, lace bodice and tulle flared skirt with a lace overlay. The reaction of my father and Scott on our wedding day made me feel even more beautiful.”
Claire purchased her dress from MiliMili Bridal, also investing in an Amanda Wyatt cathedral-length veil at the boutique. “I paired my veil with a pearl and diamanté hair slide, coordinating teardrop earrings and a simple pearl necklace. I wanted my jewellery to complement the pearl buttons on my dress. Scott gifted me a diamanté bracelet from Liberty in Love on our wedding morning.”
Scott opted to celebrate his Scottish roots in his outfit choice for the big day. “He chose a navy tartan kilt and a custom jacket and grey waistcoat from Kilt Society, teamed with a bespoke shirt that had his initials embroidered into the cuffs.” The groom completed his look with a traditional sporran, brown monk strap dress shoes and silver stag accessories.
“When our eyes met walking down the aisle all my nerves fell away. He looked so handsome and I couldn’t stop smiling.”
The bride asked her sister, Scott’s sister and her two best friends to be her bridesmaids. “I knew quite early on that I wanted the girls to wear light grey, floor-length multiway dresses. They kept my accessories theme going with pearl stud earrings and bracelets and all looked so beautiful.
Vanessa Stacey, the sister of one of my bridesmaids, was the talented hairdresser who styled our locks. I hired Beauty by Zoe to do our makeup, having seen her do the makeup for a friend’s wedding last year.”
“Have your hair and makeup trials on the same day to see how your big day look will come together.”
Marrying in a civil ceremony at Smeetham Hall Barn, Claire walked down the aisle with her father to ‘At Last’ by Etta James.
“’At Last’ is a beautiful song and felt appropriate seeing as Scott took eight years to pop the question!”
A close friend read a personalised take on ‘The Hands Ceremony’.
Afterwards, the newlyweds and their guests dined on a three-course feast, starting with a twist on a full English breakfast. “We then enjoyed slow-cooked beef in a red wine and bacon sauce with dauphinoise potatoes, followed by either cheesecake – Scott’s favourite – or sticky toffee pudding – mine – for dessert.
“I know I’m biased, but the speeches were some of the best I’ve ever heard.”
“My dad’s was so thoughtful and touching, there wasn’t a dry eye left. Scott followed with a funny and sentimental speech that he delivered perfectly, he made me laugh and cry and I couldn’t have wished for him to say anything better.
Then came the dreaded best man’s speech, delivered by Scott’s best friend Matthew. He should be a stand up comic because he brought the house down! It really was hilarious – he’d even made a (thankfully fake!) naked picture of Scott to parade around.”
Avoiding anything too colourful, the couple created a colour scheme of neutral cream, white and grey, enhanced with fairy lights and vintage touches. “I made metres of bunting to decorate the marquee from lace and grey fabrics, as well as creating my own table confetti by hole-punching heart shapes out of books. Scott made the wooden welcome to our wedding sign.”
A Vintage Wedding took care of the flowers for the day. “She designed elegant white bouquets and buttonholes using roses and gypsophila. I left the centrepieces up to the florist and she didn’t disappoint, styling a stunning mix of cream and green arrangements with an elegant, vintage aesthetic.”
The couple commissioned an Eiffel Tower cake stand in a nod to their engagement at Vegas’s The Paris Hotel.
“A family friend made our cake from fruit, chocolate and lemon tiers.”
Another friend played the saxophone during the drinks reception and Claire and Scott also organised a fireworks display for the evening. “We shared our first dance to John Legend’s ‘Stay With You’.”
“Stevie Wonder’s ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered’ played immediately after our first dance. We knew it would fill the floor!”
After the wedding, the couple flew back out to Las Vegas with Virgin Holidays, staying at the Aria Hotel for five nights. “We flew on from there to Mexico to the Secret Silversands Riviera Cancun resort for 10 more nights – it was just what we needed after an action-packed time in Vegas.”
