Staycations are on the rise! With so many beautiful places to see in the UK, it’s no surprise that more and more of us are choosing to holiday – and even honeymoon – at home. But can you guess which location came in as the most popular?

Whether it’s the Cornish coastline, quintessentially English cottages in the Cotswolds or rugged fells of the Lake District – the lure of our beautiful isles has persuaded millions to stay closer to home for their holidays.New research from Sykes Holiday Cottages has unveiled the most popular destinations in the UK for a staycation. Analysing its booking data from the entirety of last year, the following destinations came out on top:

  1. Yarmouth, Isle of Wight
  2. Whitby, North Yorkshire
  3. Filey, North Yorkshire
  4. Falmouth, Cornwall
  5. Windermere, Cumbria
  6. Scarborough, North Yorkshire
  7. Pickering, North Yorkshire
  8. Benllech, North Wales
  9. Beadnell, Northumberland
  10. Llandudno, North Wales

The added bonus of holidaying at home is that you get to bring your pets with you! Bookings for luxury and pet-friendly accommodation have risen 26% in the past year, with other enticing features including a hot tub or swimming pool. In 2017 the typical cottage booking was a luxury, pet-friendly three-bed property with an open fire, garden, off-road parking and wifi. The average staycation length is six days, with the most popular day for booking a break being 10 January – something to lift those post-Christmas blues! And while Devon and Cornwall remain the most booked destinations, new towns and resorts are rising the ranks, such as Whitby in Yorkshire and Llandudno in Wales.

A huge 74% are set to holiday closer to home this year – an increase of 18% since 2017. True, staying in the UK can sometimes be more expensive than a package deal to the Med, and we all know that the weather can never be guaranteed, but over half say staying in the UK is easier than braving airport security, with 46% saying there’s no need to travel elsewhere when there’s enough beautiful destinations at home.
