Just as every bride dreams, Samantha and Mel’s romance was fit for a fairytale from the very first day. “He burst into my life in a riot of colour and the chemistry between us was electrifying – I’d never met anyone so interesting and full of life and laughter,” says Samantha. “We got engaged in the Lake District one August bank holiday weekend.
“Mel had hired us a rowboat on Lake Windermere and told me 10 reasons why he loved me. He popped the question right there on the water in the little boat!”
I saw my Maggie Sottero dress in Wedding Ideas! The intricate details and different style to the dress really struck me, so I located a stockist and purchased it at From This Moment, Surrey.” Samantha’s gown featured a Swarovski crystal jacket overlaid on a strapless lace gown with a classic silhouette. “I felt like a movie star ready to go to the Oscars!” Ivory peep toe shoes from Pink Paradox and pearl drop earrings complemented the bride’s dazzling jacket.
Mel was the picture of a handsome groom, wearing a tailor made navy three-piece suit from Moss Bros, also sourcing his brown shoes from the store. “He looked so dashing and happy, I felt so lucky,” Samantha smiles.
The bride’s four bridesmaids came from both sides of the family because it was important to Samantha that both families felt like an integral part of the day. “Their dresses came from ASOS and I chose a lace design to complement the lace on my own gown. We chose navy to match the groom and finished their looks with gold sandals sourced in New Look.” Donna Harris took care of the bride’s hair and makeup, creating an old Hollywood-inspired hairstyle to complement Samantha’s vintage-inspired dress.
“Remember to use a primer and finish with a setting spray to seal your makeup in place all day and night,” the bride recommends.
Samantha and Mel’s religious ceremony featured readings from Hebrews 12 and John 20. “The best part was standing at the altar and gazing into Mel’s eyes as we promised to love and look after each other forever, no matter what.”
Being keen cooks of a Sunday roast themselves, often hosting friends and family for dinner, their wedding menu offered a similar theme. “The starter was smoked salmon and white crab terrine, followed by a roast rib eye of beef with roast potatoes and chianti juice. For dessert we chose a refreshing lemon and passion fruit delice which was the perfect palate cleanser.”
In keeping with the bride’s gown, the couple also opted for a vintage theme for their big day decorations. “We decorated the venue with beautiful white drapes from Bows Hire to give the room a more intimate feel. Jeanette’s Flowers supplied all the florals from our bouquets and buttonholes to our table centres, and we ordered a beautiful four-tiered cake from Marks and Spencer. We placed a little rowing boat on the top of the cake to mark Mel’s very special proposal on Lake Windermere.”

In keeping with their vintage theme, the wedding favours were glass trinket jars for the ladies with personalised messages inside.
The men received an assortment of superhero cufflinks. “It generated a lot of debate as to who received the best superhero!” laughs the bride.
Rather than make do with run of the mill name cards, this couple got creative and chose personalised photograph place settings instead. Insta Junction supplied the prints and the guests could then take the photographs home as a treasured memento to Mel and Samantha’s special day.
The evening line up of entertainment was equally considered, with Dom Pipkin playing a repertoire of New Orleans Jazz on the piano to get the party off to a great start and a DJ from 1 Entertainment following afterwards. Guests could also get dressed up for funny photographs in the photobooth supplied by Magical Times who also presented the couple with a photo book afterwards. The cherry on the cake, though, was the fireworks display that took place after the first dance.
“Guests were ushered onto the balcony and there was a breathtaking firework display which lit up the night sky in a myriad of vibrant colours,” Samantha recalls.
“We went on a west coast road trip of the USA for our honeymoon, visiting San Francisco, Hawaii and Las Vegas! We saw the Golden Gate Bridge and the sea lions on Pier 39 in San Francisco; swam with giant turtles in Hawaii and watched the sunrise from 10,000ft up a volcano, and in Las Vegas we explored every hotel on the strip!
When it comes to managing the planning, make sure you write a joint to-do list,” the couple encourage. “And make one for on the day too – Mel planned to give me a present during his speech but he had forgotten it so he had to send his brother to retrieve it!”
