Seasoned traveller Jessica Smith set off to the perfect romantic hideaway in rural Spain…

The most romantic of settings for a wedding or the perfect short-haul mini moon, Royal Hideaway La Bobadilla in Andalucia is just an hour’s drive from Malaga airport, and not far from Granada, the Sierra Nevada mountains and stunning Seville.

Looking to Short-haul Mini Moon In The Med?! Fall In Love With Rural Spain, Andalucia...

La Bobadilla

Sensational setting

The Royal Hideaway La Bobadilla is a five-star hotel set in 1,000 acres of private and protected grounds, including olive groves and oak woodlands. Designed by architect Jesus del Valle, the hotel is reminiscent of an Andalusian village with interconnecting courtyards, fountains, gardens, grand white marble columns, carved wood ceilings and tiled patios, all inspired by Moorish history.

Staying in style

With each of the 67 rooms and suites being different in décor and style, the hotel is beautifully presented and tastefully furnished. You think that by its ‘hideaway’ nature that Bobadilla would leave you with nothing to do, but far from it. The classical U-Spa is all tiles, exposed brick columns and high, arched white ceilings. There are three treatment rooms (including a couples suite with two massage tables and two whirlpool baths) and a hydrotherapy zone, incorporating a heated indoor pool with body jets, hydro-massage pool with neck massages and waterfall, plus a Finnish sauna and steam room. We enjoyed an outdoor ‘olive oil treatment’ massage that was so calming and relaxing that we may have nodded off! Sheer bliss. There is also a tennis court and a network of paths for walking and cycling around the estate.

Food, glorious food

Food is a massive thing at Royal Hideaway Bobadilla, and as far as restaurants go, you will be spoilt for choice… La Finca is the only ‘five fork’ restaurant in the Granada Province, offering Mediterranean haute cuisine using high quality, locally sourced ingredients. We enjoyed a meal here sitting on the restaurant’s outside patio, which offers dramatic views of the mountains and olive groves. El Cortijo restaurant serves gastronomic Spanish and regional cuisine, and also hosts a cocktail bar, from which we enjoyed a sundowner on the terrace, overlooking the Loja mountain range.

Eco credentials

La Bobadilla is something of an eco-pioneer, being the first luxury hotel of its kind to use ultra-sustainable olive-stone biomass fuel as an energy source for heating and hot water. It also has a lovely, well-stocked kitchen garden.

Get wed

If you’re looking to get married abroad, La Bobadilla is the perfect spot, with an on-site non-denomination chapel and many other picturesque spots in and around the grounds to choose from. The perfect place for a bride to wake up on the morning of her wedding would be the Bobadilla Suite, from where you can stargaze through the telescope after your celebrations, too.

Let’s go!
